Very easy and satisfying to play! I like the fact that there are packs of puzzles that are at different levels of difficulty to choose from. I play the hard packs. These are neither too hard (driving you crazy) or too easy (and so, boring). I also like the option to see any errors display in red so that I know if I’m on the right solving track. I play this often.

I love these crossword puzzles, but occasionally there is an ad that will not allow users to return to the puzzle—no matter how long one waits or whatever is tried in order to move on. (Latest “bad” ad was one which made you go to “next page”—& there is no way to close it out!) I’ve actually had to delete the app three times in the past to get back into the crosswords! If this happens again, I will definitely use a different crossword site. These ads are more than annoying—try greedy and dishonest. Patricia Ariadne, Ph.D. Still happening (3/21/25). Just had to shut down app 2X this week because ads will not close out. Looking for new crossword generator!

Key User Pain Points

  • High Ad Removal Price: Many users find the cost to remove ads ($20-$30) excessively high compared to other apps. This discourages users from supporting the app.
  • Lack of Landscape Mode on iPads: iPad users frequently request landscape mode support, as the app's current portrait-only orientation is inconvenient for keyboard use and general ergonomics.
  • Repetitive Clues and Outdated References: Some users note that clues and answers are often repetitive, making the puzzles less challenging and engaging. Others complain about outdated pop culture references, making the puzzles less relevant to younger audiences.
  • Misspellings and Incorrect Clues/Answers: Occasional misspellings, grammatical errors, and factually incorrect clues/answers detract from the app's credibility and user satisfaction.
  • Perceived Bias: A number of reviewers claim that some puzzles contain political, religious, or cultural biases that they find offensive.
  • Glitches and Bugs: Several users reported technical issues, such as ads that won't close, the app freezing, and the backspace button malfunctioning.

Opportunities for Startup Ideas

  • Premium Crossword Subscription Service: A crossword app with a focus on curated, high-quality puzzles, a clean user interface, and minimal advertising. This could target users who are willing to pay for a premium experience.

  • AI-Powered Crossword Puzzle Generator: An app that uses artificial intelligence to generate unique and challenging crossword puzzles based on user-specified themes, difficulty levels, and vocabulary preferences.
  • Accessibility-Focused Crossword App: An app designed with accessibility in mind, offering features such as adjustable font sizes, voice control, and screen reader compatibility.

Trends and Observations

  • Advertising Complaints Increase Over Time: A recurring pattern is that users who initially tolerated ads become increasingly frustrated with their frequency and intrusiveness over time.
  • Price Sensitivity: Users are very price-sensitive regarding the ad removal fee. Raising the price has led to negative reviews.
  • iPad-Specific Issues: The lack of landscape mode and keyboard compatibility are significant pain points for iPad users.
  • Content Concerns: While not the majority, a significant number of reviewers have expressed concerns about biased or offensive content, indicating a need for better content moderation.

Conclusion

The Crossword Puzzle Redstone app has a strong foundation with its extensive puzzle library and offline accessibility. However, to maintain user satisfaction and attract new users, the developers must address the key pain points related to advertising, pricing, and usability. Prioritizing the action recommendations outlined above will significantly improve the user experience and ensure the app's continued success.

Overall Recommendation: Focus on improving the core user experience by addressing advertising issues and usability concerns. This will likely have a greater impact on user satisfaction and retention than adding new features.
