I want to express my deep disappointment with Instagram. I’ve had some of the worst experiences with your platform. Both of my accounts were compromised, and ever since, the recovery process has been a nightmare. You request an excessive amount of personal information, yet the pages constantly glitch, freeze, and show endless pop-ups that interrupt every step. Despite following all instructions, the recovery method never completes, and I still don’t know if my accounts even exist anymore. I even changed my phone number just to complete the SMS verification, and I never received the message. The entire experience has been extremely frustrating, stressful, and honestly unacceptable for such a big platform. I just want a clear, working way to recover my accounts.

He usado ig desde hace unos cuatro o tres años, pero la actualización de desplazamiento fácil no me agrada, siento mi perfil muy sobrecargado y la bandeja de mensajes sobrecargada. No me acostumbro aún. Por favor regresen la versión anterior 😭🙏🏻

Prioritized Action Recommendations

High Priority:

  1. Address Unjust Account Suspensions: Implement a more transparent and fair account suspension process, including clear explanations for suspensions and a robust appeal system with human review. This is the most critical issue affecting user trust.
  2. Improve Customer Support: Provide more accessible and responsive customer support channels, including email or phone support, to address user issues promptly.
  3. Re-evaluate UI Changes: Conduct thorough user testing before implementing major UI changes. Provide options for customization or reverting to previous layouts.
  4. Optimize Algorithm: Refine the algorithm to prioritize content from friends and family and reduce the number of irrelevant ads and Reels in the feed. Give users more control over the content they see.

Medium Priority:

  1. Fix Technical Glitches: Address reported technical issues, such as lagging, posting problems, and notification errors.
  2. Improve Picture Quality: Investigate and address reports of picture quality degradation during uploads.
  3. Consider a Subscription Option: Explore the possibility of offering a subscription option that removes ads and provides access to premium features, such as a chronological feed.

Low Priority:

  1. Add Post-Editing Features: Consider adding basic post-editing features, such as cropping and adding emojis, to allow users to make minor adjustments after posting.

Opportunities for Startup Ideas

  • Decentralized Social Media Platform: A social media platform that prioritizes user control over content and data, with a focus on chronological feeds and minimal algorithmic filtering.
  • Instagram Support Service: A third-party service that helps users navigate Instagram's account recovery and appeal processes.
  • Customizable Instagram Client: A client app that allows users to customize the Instagram UI and filter out unwanted content.
  • AI-Powered Content Moderation Tool: A tool that uses AI to identify and remove harmful content more accurately, reducing the risk of unjust account suspensions.

Trends and Observations

  • Language Preferences: The reviews are primarily in English, with some in Spanish.
  • Shift in Sentiment: There is a clear trend towards negative sentiment, driven by recent changes and issues.
  • Recurring Themes: The complaints about UI changes, account suspensions, and algorithm biases are consistently repeated throughout the reviews.
  • Frustration with Reels: The forced integration of Reels is a major source of frustration for many users.

Conclusion

Instagram faces significant challenges in maintaining user satisfaction. The negative sentiment expressed in the reviews highlights the need for immediate action to address key pain points, particularly regarding account suspensions, UI changes, and algorithmic biases. By prioritizing user feedback and implementing the recommended improvements, Instagram can regain user trust and ensure its long-term success. The product strategy should focus on empowering users, providing greater control over their experience, and restoring the core values that made Instagram popular in the first place.
