I just purchased today and walked through my kitchen and the first five items I scanned it didn’t recognize. Poor app. Wish I could get my money back.
I use to use this app all the time but now it’s like every time I try to use it, it can’t find what I’m scanning. I was actually getting on to see if it needed to be updated (it doesn’t, updated last week) because I scanned a sauce that has been in my pantry for months, so it’s not even new and it couldn’t find it.
This app is such a vital tool for a Celiac, and especially for my non-Celiac family members who understand less about how to read food labels and find food that is safe for me to eat. When they can scan a food label and get a clear GLUTEN FREE or CONTAINS GLUTEN label, that is very helpful. Most of the time, you get a more ambiguous “No gluten-containing ingredients” which then requires the research rabbit hole us Celiacs are all familiar with. I know it must be really hard to add in manufacturer info beyond the ingredient list and certification status of many thousands of products. One feature idea is to add a voting system or comments on individual products so celiacs can easily share notes such as “I called the manufacturer and they told me x,y,z” or “this brand is generally safe” etc. This would be hugely helpful, since the users of this app have to do tons of research on everything we eat anyway, and it would be helpful to scan a barcode and if it isn’t a clear GF or non-GF, to benefit from the research other celiacs have done. Could partner with celiac.com, which is where a lot of this research is disseminated. Another suggestion for iOS: integration with the Control Center so you can call up the scanner as easily as the phone’s flashlight or camera. Also, adding Shortcuts capabilities so app users can improve access and usability on their own devices. Generally, the app could use some improvement on its user interface and navigation. Like I said, it’s an invaluable resource, but I’d love to see it making incremental improvements to its database and usability. I really hope this happens! Anyway, thank you for doing this work, I am so grateful.

The Gluten Free Scanner Full app has the potential to be a valuable tool for individuals with Celiac disease or gluten sensitivities. However, significant issues with database accuracy, scanner functionality, and overall reliability are hindering its success. Addressing these issues is crucial to improving user satisfaction and achieving the app's full potential. Prioritizing database improvements and scanner functionality fixes will be the most impactful changes.
